Minority Representation
We are committed to understanding and promoting equity and inclusion within the service design field. Through this lens, we explore the experiences of professionals who identify as members of underrepresented or marginalized groups. We recognize that individuals may identify with multiple minority groups, and the experiences of those with intersecting identities can be unique.
We use the term 'minority' to refer to groups that have historically faced discrimination or marginalization. We acknowledge that this term can be complex and perceived differently by various individuals and communities.
The Survey Question
In our survey, we asked respondents the following question. The charts in this chapter visualize the responses, where "Unknown" indicates that a respondent did not answer this specific question.
Do you identify as a member of a minority group?
- Yes
- No
History of the Question
To better understand the diverse backgrounds of service designers, we introduced this question in the 2024 survey. It has remained consistent since then, helping us track and analyze the experiences of minority groups in the field over time.
In 2025, the options for specifying minority groups were expanded based on feedback from the previous year. This year's options included Ethnicity, Nationality, Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Background, and Other.
Filter the Data
Median Salary
The following chart breaks down the median salary by minority identification, allowing for a direct comparison. You can filter the data by country and year to explore regional and temporal differences.
Note: We only show the median salary based on the data from people at agencies and in-house (excluding freelance).
Satisfaction Score
This chart visualizes the average compensation satisfaction score reported by different minority groups. The y-axis is truncated to better highlight the nuanced differences in satisfaction levels.
Respondents Breakdown
To provide context for the salary and satisfaction data, this chart shows the percentage of respondents from each minority category who participated in the survey for the selected country and year(s).
Diversity of Minority Groups
In 2025, we expanded our survey to better understand the diverse backgrounds within our community, allowing respondents to specify their minority identification. Note that respondents could select multiple categories (e.g., identifying as both Neurodivergent and LGBTQ+), so the percentages below may sum to more than the percentage of people who identified as a minority.
